English listening exercises for beginners

Starting to understand spoken English takes small, regular steps. Here are listening exercises for beginners, a simple daily plan, and what to do when it feels too fast.

Start with short, clear audio

At A1, listen to short sentences spoken slowly and clearly, about everyday things: family, food, places, daily routines. Long films and podcasts are too much at first; short texts you can replay are better.

A simple daily routine

  • 1 minute: listen to the sentence of the day and write it down.
  • 5 to 10 minutes: do one A1 dictation, one sentence at a time.
  • After each sentence, compare your answer and look at every mistake.
  • Once a week: replay an old dictation and see how much more you catch.

Listen to the sentence of the day

When it feels too fast

  • Replay the same sentence: three or four listens is normal at the start.
  • Write the words you are sure of first, then fill in the gaps.
  • Listen for the important words (names, places, actions); small words come later.
  • Don’t move up a level too soon. Understanding most of a text is better than guessing at a harder one.

Podcasts for beginners

Podcasts are great for getting used to English, as long as they are made for learners. Look for episodes that are short (5 to 15 minutes), spoken slowly, and come with a transcript, so you can check what you missed. Listen to one episode several times rather than many episodes once.

Podcasts are good for general listening; for finding exactly which words you miss, add a short dictation.

When to move up to A2

When you can write most A1 sentences correctly after two listens, try A2. The level test can also tell you where you are.

Questions from beginners

What are good listening exercises for beginners?

Listen to short, slow sentences every day and write them down. Dictation at A1 level shows you exactly which words you heard and which you missed.

How long should I practise each day?

Ten minutes a day is enough to make steady progress. Doing it every day matters more than doing a lot at once.

Is dictation too hard for beginners?

Not at A1: the sentences are short and slow, and you can replay each one as often as you need. It is one of the best ways to start.
