Who runs this site
EnglishDictations is run by Yehor Lypskyi, a private individual, not a company. I am responsible for your data (the “controller” under the GDPR). Questions or requests: yehor.lypskyi@gmail.com.
What I collect
- Without an account: nothing that identifies you. Answers you send are checked and kept without any link to you.
- With an account: your name, email address and password (stored only as a secure hash), and your learning progress: finished dictations, your answers and scores, and level test results.
- For security: when you sign in, your IP address and browser type are stored with the session; IP addresses are also counted briefly to stop password guessing and spam.
Why
To run your account and show your progress (needed to provide the service you sign up for), and to keep the site and accounts safe (legitimate interest). I don’t sell your data, show ads or build marketing profiles.
Cookies and browser storage
Only what the site needs to work, so no consent banner is used:
- a sign-in cookie that keeps you signed in (30 days, renewed when used);
- a “known device” cookie set when you sign in, so other people’s failed sign-in attempts can’t lock you out (1 year);
- browser storage for your language, the practice tips you’ve seen, and the dictations and level tests you finished before signing in, so they can join your account when you do (30 days).
Visitor statistics use Cloudflare Web Analytics, which sets no cookies and doesn’t track you across sites. The site also counts how many times Play is pressed to start a dictation, per lesson and hour, with nothing that says who pressed it.
Who else handles data
- Cloudflare hosts the site and its databases.
- Resend sends account emails (confirming your address, password resets).
They process data only on my behalf. Some processing may happen outside the EU; these providers use the EU’s standard contractual clauses for that.
How long it’s kept
Account data and progress: until you delete your account. Sessions: until they expire or you sign out. Security counters: a day at most. Unconfirmed sign-up links expire after 24 hours, password reset links after 1 hour.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct, export or delete your data, or object to how it’s used: email yehor.lypskyi@gmail.com from the address on your account and I’ll reply within a month. You can also complain to your data protection authority.
Children
The site is for learners of any age, but accounts are meant for people aged 16 or older, or younger with a parent’s permission.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date above changes too. Important changes will be announced on the site.
