B1 dictation: questions and answers
Build confidence with longer sentences and connected speech on familiar topics. B1 dictation helps you move from understanding the main idea to recognising the words that carry it.
What should I focus on in B1 dictations?
First follow the story, then check the details: who did what, the order of events and the reasons given. Use corrections to find recurring problems, such as contractions, verb endings or words that run together in speech.
Why can I understand a story but not write every word?
Understanding the main idea uses context; dictation also asks you to recognise the exact words. You may understand the message while missing an article or a shortened verb. Review those gaps without treating them as a failure to understand the whole story.
How can I stop translating every sentence in my head?
Listen once for the situation before you start writing. On the next listen, work with short English phrases rather than translating each word. After checking the text, replay the sentence and picture its meaning directly.
What is a useful B1 listening routine?
Complete one short dictation, review two or three phrases you missed and listen again without reading. On another day, revisit those phrases and try fresh audio. Include conversations, stories or podcasts so your practice extends beyond typing.
When should I move from B1 to B2?
Try B2 when unfamiliar B1 dictations are usually clear and you mainly need replays for small details. Judge yourself across several new lessons. Your dictation score is a practice result, not a certificate of your overall CEFR level.
Are these B1 dictations an official exam?
No. They are free listening and spelling practice, and you can start without an account. For an exam, also practise its official task types: dictation does not assess every reading, writing, speaking or listening skill.
