A1 dictation: questions and answers
Start with short, clear sentences about familiar things: people, food, home and daily routines. Use these beginner dictations to connect the words you know with how they sound.
Is A1 dictation suitable for a complete beginner?
A1 is the easiest level here. It is a good starting point if you know some everyday English words and can read simple sentences. If a whole story feels difficult, practise a few A1 sentences first and build up gradually.
How should I practise an A1 dictation?
Listen to a sentence once for its meaning, then replay it and type the words you hear. Check the correction, listen again and say the sentence aloud. Finish by listening once more without looking at the words.
What should I do if I cannot hear a word?
Write the words you recognise and replay the sentence. If the missing word still makes no sense, check the correction instead of guessing repeatedly. Listen again while reading it, then hide the text and try once more.
What if I hear the right word but spell it incorrectly?
Treat that as a spelling problem to practise separately. Read the correct word, cover it and write it again. Notice whether your mistakes are unfamiliar spellings or words you did not recognise in the audio; they need different kinds of practice.
When should I try A2 dictations?
Try A2 when you can follow the meaning of several new A1 dictations and write most words with only a few replays. You do not need a perfect score. If A2 feels overwhelming, alternate it with A1 or use the free level test to choose a starting point.
Are the A1 dictations free, and do I need an account?
The dictations are free, and you can practise without signing up. Sign in to a free account if you want to save your results and keep track of completed lessons.
