B1 dictation: frequently asked questions

How should I use this dictation to improve my listening?

Listen to each sentence for its meaning, then replay it and type what you hear. Compare your answer with the correction and listen specifically for the words you missed. Finish by listening again without reading the text.

Can I replay a sentence if I do not catch every word?

Yes. Use the player to listen again while you work on the sentence. Try to identify a little more each time. If repeated listening stops helping, check the correction, then replay the sentence with the correct words in mind.

Where can I find the full transcript?

Open “Full transcript” below the player to read the complete passage. Try the exercise before opening it, then use it to check difficult phrases. Close it for a final listen so you can test what you now recognise by ear.

What should I focus on at B1?

Follow the story first, then check its exact wording. Review contractions, linking words and phrases where several familiar words sounded like one. Finish by listening again without the transcript.

What should I do with my mistakes?

Separate words you did not hear from words you heard but misspelled. Replay missed phrases with the correction visible, then hide it and try again. Practise spelling separately, and revisit the difficult phrases later before trying new audio.

Can I print this dictation for offline or classroom practice?

Use “Printable worksheet (PDF)” below the player. The worksheet includes practice activities and an answer key. For listening practice, play the online recording while you write on paper; keep the answers covered until you have finished.

Should I repeat this lesson or try another dictation?

Repeat the phrases you missed until you can hear the correction, then choose a new B1 dictation from the links above. Fresh audio shows whether the skill transfers beyond memorising one passage. If you cannot follow the message, try an easier level or use the free level test to find a starting point.
