IELTS listening practice and tips

The IELTS Listening test checks how well you follow spoken English and how accurately you write down what you hear. Dictation trains exactly that: listening closely and spelling every word correctly.

How IELTS Listening works

  • Four recordings, 40 questions, about 30 minutes.
  • The recordings range from everyday conversations to an academic talk, and get harder as the test goes on.
  • You hear each recording once.
  • Speakers have a range of accents, such as British, Australian and North American.
  • Spelling counts: an answer spelled wrong is marked wrong.

IELTS bands and CEFR levels

IELTS scores are often compared with CEFR levels, roughly: band 4 to 5 is around B1, band 5.5 to 6.5 around B2, band 7 to 8 around C1, and 8.5 or above around C2. Many universities ask for 6.5 or 7, which is upper B2 to C1.

So if you are aiming for band 6.5 or 7, practise listening at B2 and C1.

How dictation helps with IELTS Listening

  • Spelling: you write every word, so spelling mistakes show up long before the exam.
  • Small words: weak forms and endings (plural -s, past -ed) can change an answer; dictation makes you hear them.
  • Speed: replaying short parts trains your ear to fast, natural speech.
  • Focus: you can’t drift off while writing every word, which builds the concentration a one-listen test needs.

IELTS listening tips

  • Read the questions before each recording starts, and underline what kind of answer you need: a number, a name, a place.
  • Listen for paraphrase: the recording rarely uses the same words as the question.
  • Watch for corrections: speakers often change their mind (“Tuesday … no, Wednesday”), and the second answer counts.
  • Keep up: if you miss an answer, move on to the next question rather than losing the next three.
  • Check word limits: “no more than two words” means three words is wrong.
  • Practise spelling numbers, dates and common words, since a misspelled answer is marked wrong.

A weekly plan

  • Every day: one dictation at your target level, about 10 minutes.
  • Twice a week: a full practice test from official IELTS materials, under exam conditions.
  • After each test: write down the parts you missed as a dictation, to see why you missed them.

Questions about IELTS listening

Is dictation good practice for IELTS Listening?

Yes. It trains careful listening and correct spelling, both of which IELTS Listening marks. Use it alongside official practice tests.

Which level should I practise for band 7?

Band 7 is roughly C1. Practise mostly at B2 and C1, and move to C1 as soon as B2 feels comfortable.

Does spelling matter in IELTS Listening?

Yes. An answer with a spelling mistake is marked wrong, so practising writing what you hear is time well spent.
